RED, WHY YOU NEED IT, AND HOW TO WEAR IT THIS SEASON

BLACK DESIGNERS TO
LOOKOUT FOR THIS NYFW

The Black New York Fashion Week has arrived! Okay, well maybe not “officially” but as far as we are concerned, it is here! With more and more designers of colors being added to the fashion week roster each year you can only imagine our excitement to see more people who look like us on the runway, and even more importantly in this case, behind the scenes creating these beautiful collections! That being said, these are the five African American/ Afro-Caribbean designers you do not want to miss this season at the official NYFW shows!

Cushnie

Formally known as Cushnie Et Ochs. This year Afro- Carib designer Carly Cushnie is making her NYFW debut apart from long term business and design partner Michelle Ochs, with Cushnie. We are reeling over this black girl magic and her mission to empower women while making them feel good. Cushnie says, “As a woman, I understand what my customer wants from her clothes. I’ve grown and evolved alongside her over the past 10 years, and I strive to present her with timeless silhouettes that make her feel sexy, sophisticated and powerful — all at once.”  We are so here for it!

Glemaud

Launched in 2006 by Haitian born designer Victor Glemaud, the label is set out to be inclusive of everyone regardless of gender, race or size. Glemaud has not only worked with some of the biggest brands in the world such as Disney and Versace, but he has also dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood like Issa Rae and Selena Gomez. Utilizing vivid hues for bold color blocking, he brings an edginess to traditional and timeless silhouettes.

Laquan Smith

Since his debut in 2010, Laquan Smith has made quite the name for himself, and we are not mad at it! Smith was influenced at a young age by his grandmother who introduced him to sewing, pattern making, and even gifted him with his first sewing machine. Today Laquan designs have been seen in everyone from the Queen B herself, to Kim K and lady Gaga (Just to Name a few.) Still Smith strives for more in hopes of one day becoming a household name known for embracing a woman’s beauty and curves. His show during this fashion week is one you don’t want to miss!

Luar

Taking a different approach from the classic style of using your namesake for your label, designer Raul Lopez uses the backwards spelling of his first name for this unique line. Drawing inspiration from his Dominican roots and New York upbringing Lopez creates looks that are avant-garde yet still “neatural in color and gender fluid.” Picked as a finalist for the CDFA Vogue Fashion Fund, His pieces have been seen on A-listers like Rihanna, Solange Knowles and Kendrick Lamar. So we look forward to his presentation at this NYFW!

Telfar

Telfar Clemons is another dope New York native looking to “blur” the gender line through his collections. Born and raised in queens you can see how the streetwear element translates into his Clemons pieces with the perfect balance of a high fashion. Serving pieces that are clearly executed with attention to detail we’re ready to see what Telfar will bring to the runway this season.

We’re ecstatic about seeing more designers of color on the official roster for NYFW this year, who’s collection are you anticipating the most?!
